Walk into almost any gym or scroll through fitness content online and you'll see flexibility and mobility treated as synonyms. They're not — and understanding the difference can meaningfully change how you train and how well your body actually functions.
Flexibility describes the capacity of a muscle or group of muscles to lengthen passively. Think of it as the raw material: how far can your hamstring stretch when you fold forward? That measurement doesn't tell you whether you can use that range when you're moving.
Mobility describes active control through a range of motion at a joint. It incorporates flexibility, but also requires muscular strength, coordination, and neuromuscular control. A gymnast may have extraordinary hip flexibility, yet still struggle with hip mobility if the surrounding muscles can't stabilise and control movement through that range.
A useful mental model: flexibility is a component of mobility, but mobility is not simply flexibility by another name.

Why the Distinction Matters for Your Body

Someone who stretches consistently may develop impressive passive flexibility. But if they never train the muscles to actively support that range, they may find that extra length doesn't translate to better movement. In some cases, hypermobility (excessive passive range without adequate muscular control) can actually increase injury risk at a joint.
Conversely, someone who has tight muscles but trains movement patterns — squatting, lunging, rotating — builds functional joint capacity even if they can't touch their toes.
